STORM LAKE, Iowa – Knights baseball fell in both games of today's American Rivers Conference doubleheader against Buena Vista University on Saturday, Apr. 16. Wartburg is now 19-13 overall and 9-6 in A-R-C play after closing the three-game series.
Game Summaries
Game 1: Wartburg 2, Buena Vista 10
The Knights got the top of the first started with a one out single from
Max Goodhue and then a double from
Zach Walton scored Goodhue to give Wartburg an early 1-0 lead.
Dreyton LaVeine started on the mound for the Orange & Black and got through the first inning with just a walk given up.
Wartburg managed one hit in the top of the second but were not able to bring any runs across. An error in the bottom of the second helped the Beavers stay alive in the inning and they took advantage with four unearned runs scored to make the score 4-1 BVU after two innings. Goodhue tripled in the third inning and was hit home by Walton to cut the lead to two. The Beavers went down in order in the third to keep the score 4-2 going to the fourth.
After a scoreless top of the fourth, Buena Vista extended its lead further with four runs in the bottom of the inning. The Beavers scored from two RBI singles, an RBI bunt single and a sacrifice flyout. After a 1-2-3 inning in the top half of the fifth, BVU added two more runs from RBI singles to bring the score to 10-2 after five innings of play.
Neither team recorded a hit throughout the rest of the game and the Knights fell 10-2 in game one.
Goodhue and Walton recorded four out of the Knights' five hits and both extra-base hits. Walton finished 2/3 at the plate with two RBI and a double. Goodhue hit his fourth triple of the season and scored both runs for the Orange & Black.
Zach Wesolowski recorded the other hit for the Knights with his single in the second inning.
Kyle Oberbroeckling and
Malcolm Newell pitched a combined three hitless innngs to close the game for the Knights. Oberbroeckling pitched one inning while Newell pitched the final two innings and recorded one strikeout.
Game 2: Wartburg 3, Buena Vista 7
The Knights went hitless in the first and then escaped a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the first with no runs allowed. After a leadoff single from Walton to begin the second inning,
Ben DeKruyf doubled to bring Walton home for the first run of the game.
Bryce Butler hit a single to leadoff the third inning and was later hit in by Goodhue, who doubled to left center with one out to give the Orange & Black a 2-0 lead. The bottom of the third inning was started with a double and a single that led to a groundout RBI for the Beavers first run. After multiple singles and a double, BVU brought in four more runs to take a 5-2 lead after three innings.
The Beavers added another run in the bottom of the fourth after a one out triple led to an RBI single to make the score 6-2. Neither team could get a hit in the fifth inning and then each team added a run in the sixth inning. The Knights scored from a Walton solo shot to left for his eighth homer of the season. Buena Vista answered in the bottom half with an RBI double that made the score 7-3.
Each team had one hit in the seventh but scored no runs. Wesolowski doubled with two outs in the eighth, but the Beavers stranded two runners to keep the score 7-3. BVU got two singles in the bottom of the inning and then stranded two runners themselves to send the game to the ninth.
Wartburg was unable to rally in the ninth and fell to Buena Vista 7-3.
Walton had another multi-hit game in the nightcap going 2/3 with one homerun. The homer is his eighth of the season and he is now at 43 RBI this season. DeKruyf was the only other Knight with a mutli-hit game in game two and he recorded one of the three RBI.
Darren Kilpatrick started on the bump for the Orange & Black and went 3.1 innings in the loss. The senior's record is now 3-4 through eight starts. Oberbroeckling pitched the final two innings for the Knights and allowed no runs and three hits.

The Orange & Black will be back home for their next series as they are set to host Simpson College on Saturday and Sunday, Apr. 23-24.
