WAVERLY, Iowa – Knights lacrosse fell 13-8 to Hamline University in a competitive Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference matchup on Saturday, Apr. 30. Wartburg closes the regular season with a 4-11 overall record and a 2-3 mark in MWLC play.
Game Summary
The Pipers got on the scoreboard first in this contest after scoring the first goal almost four minutes in. Hamline added another goal just one minute later to make the score 2-0 early.
Olivia Christianson scored the Knights' first goal and then tied the game at two after
Bri Greiskalns found her with an assist. Greiskalns added a man-up goal off a great assist from
Beka Gershenoff with just under six minutes left in the period.
The Knights led 3-2 heading into the second quarter of play, but it was all Hamline to start the quarter. The Pipers struck quickly, tying the game at three just 35 seconds into the period. Hamline scored three more unanswered goals in the second to take a 6-3 lead.
Britta Solheim scored her first goal of the game to stop the run with just over five minutes left in the half. The Pipers scored again, but the Knights got it back with a Greiskalns goal right before the half ended.
Hamline took a 7-5 lead into halftime.
The Pipers started the second half with another goal in the first minute of the quarter to make it 8-5, but neither team would find the net again until 7:36 left in the third where
Lindsay Langford scored after Greiskalns dished it for her second assist of the game. With the score 8-6, Hamline went on another run to close the third quarter with four unanswered goals, including three in a row from Maitland Luksan.
Greiskalns found
Mallory Thys for a goal 53 seconds into the final period to cut the lead to 12-7. After five minuetes of scoreless play, Hamline finds the net again to make the score 13-7. The Knights kept up the defensive intensity and fought until the end.
Ellie Johnson scored the final goal of the contest to make the final score 13-8.
Game Leaders
Christianson and Greiskalns led the way in scoring with two goals each for the Knights. Christianson now has four goals this season and the senior added one ground ball today.
Greiskalns led the offense with five total points after two goals and three assists. This marks the fourth time this season she has recorded three assists in a game, including back-to-back games now. The fifth-year senior led the Orange & Black in draw controls with five and recorded one of the team's three caused turnovers.
Alyson Hasner made her 12
th start this season in goal today and played all 60 minutes in net. The freshman tallied four saves in the loss and is now 4-9 in decisions.
Next Time Out
For the first time in program history the Knights will take part in MWLC Postseason play. Wartburg is the fourth seed and will face the regular season conference champions Lake Forest on the road Wednesday, May 4.
