Baseball Defeated 8-3 by Nebraska Wesleyan

WAVERLY, Iowa – Knights baseball opened the weekend with an 8-3 loss that saw seven home runs between both teams on Friday, May 6. The Knights fall to 21-18 overall and to 11-11 in American Rivers Conference play.

Game Summary
Both teams went down scoreless in the first inning with one hit one each side. The Orange & Black got on the scoreboard first after Caleb Andrews hit a solo shot to left filed to make it 1-0 after two innings.

The Prairie Wolves answered in the top of the third with a solo home run of their own from Evan Kling. Dylan Gotto got out of the inning with just one run given up. In the bottom half of the third, it was Max Goodhue's turn for a solo homer. The homer was his third of the season and the score was 2-1 after three innings.

Goodhue stole a hit in the top of the fourth inning after making an incredible diving play in right field. Ben DeKruyf led the bottom of the fourth off with a no-doubt home run to left-center field that extended the lead to 3-1. Andrews tripled in the next at bat but was stranded at third after three-straight outs.

In the fifth inning, NWU started with a walk and a hit by pitch before Kaleb Knox homered to center field to give the Prairie Wolves their first lead. Gotto got out of the inning with no other runs scored and the Knights were unable to score any in the bottom half. Gotto struck out two in the sixth and the score remained 4-3 after six innings.

Knox homered for a second time in the top of the seventh to push the NWU lead to 5-3. The Knights offense was held hitless in the seventh and then stranded three runners in the eighth to remain behind by two.

Will Armstrong came in to pitch the final inning in relief of Gotto. The Prairie Wolves started the inning with a hit by pitch and a single before Knox hit another three-run shot for his third home run of the contest. The Knights brought no runs across in the ninth and fell 8-3.

Game Leaders
Andrews led all Knights hitters with a 3/3 day at the plate and one walk drawn. His second inning homerun marked his third home run of the season, and the sophomore was just a double shy of hitting for the cycle today. This is Andrews' third time this season recording three hits in a game.

DeKruyf has hit five home runs in the last four games for the Orange & Black and the senior is now at nine homers this season. DeKruyf finished the contest 1/3 at the plate with a walk drawn.

Both Zach Walton and Goodhue were the only two other Knights who finished the game with multiple hits.

Gotto went eight full innings in his 11th start of the season and is now 6-3 in decisions after the loss. The senior struck out eight batters today and gave up five earned runs off seven hits.
