WAVERLY, Iowa—Senior
Dallas Wright (Carlisle, Iowa) was named a Second-team Academic All-America® for men's track & field/cross country as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), the national organization announced today.
This is his second career honor, as he previously earned this award last season (2020-21). To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must have a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or better and must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games at the position listed on the nomination form (where applicable).
"Dallas' impact to our programs, history and tradition will be one that we will talk about for many years to come," said head coach
Marcus Newsom. "He was selfless and committed himself for what was always best for the team, even when it meant sacrificing for individual goals. His passion, focus and commitment to excellence will be forever remembered to me as a coach and I hope for every student-athlete that he competed with and against. I was very fortunate to have watched him grow not just as an athlete but more importantly as a young man of integrity and faith. I will always be indebted to his parents and his high school coaches for sharing Dallas with me and our Wartburg track and field family."
Dallas is a business administration major with a 3.45 GPA.
"I was able to balance my academics and athletics because they are both very important to me," he said. "I knew that in order to meet the expectations that I set for myself and set for me by others, both of them needed to receive their due attention. But more than that was part of a program that allows us to truly be students before we are athletes. From day one, academics were always the priority of our program and Coach Newsom always made sure that there we no conflicts with class and track."
He is the 122nd Academic All-America honoree for Wartburg and 16
th selection for men's track & field/cross country.
"I've learned many skills (from being a student-athlete), but the most important would-be time management," Wright commented. "Being able to use my time wisely and in a way where I can get the most done in a specific amount of time and done the right way. Another skill I learned was performing under pressure. Wartburg is known for its success in the classroom and athletics as well. So, learning how to meet those expectations while remaining composed and in control was a skill well learned.
"Being part of the WTF team has brought me relationships that will last a lifetime," he continued. "It has taught me many lessons over the years that I know will help me later on in life and allow me to be successful in my profession. But most of all are the memories that it has brought me. Memories on and off the track that I will carry with me forever. Wartburg is where I found my second family and there is no other place I would rather have spent my college years than Wartburg and no other group of people that I would have rather shared it with than my WTF teammates and coaches."
The Division II and III CoSIDA Academic All-America® programs are partially financially supported by the NCAA Division II and III national governance structures to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2021-22 Divisions II and III Academic All-America® programs.
