WAVERLY, Iowa – No. 8/14 Wartburg women's basketball (5-0) battled all four quarters for a 62-59 win at home over the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire (2-3) on Saturday, Nov. 25.
Macy Harris and
Jaedon Murphy combined for 41 points to lead Wartburg to 5-0 overall (1-0 in American Rivers Conference).
First quarter
- Lauren Woeste got the Knights scoring started three minutes into the game to cut the early deficit to two
- Harris ended a three-minute scoreless streak by Wartburg with a layup to cut the Eau Claire lead to three with three minutes left in the quarter
- Murphy scored seven of the Knights last nine points in the first to tie the game 15-15 after one
Second quarter
- The Knights started the quarter slow until Harris made their first field goal of the quarter to put Wartburg ahead 21-20
- The Knights and the Blugolds battled back and forth with four lead changes during the second and no lead being larger than four points
- A late three by Grace Hennessy and an and-one by Harris let the Knights tie the game 30-30 before half
Third quarter
- Free throws and layups go in early for both teams before Murphy hit a three to give the Knights a 37-36 lead with six minutes to play in the quarter
- Both teams traded scores over the next three minutes until a layup with 2:21 put the Blugolds ahead by three
- Free throws from Woeste and Lauren Golinghorst cut the lead to one late into the third quarter
- Golinghorst made a layup at the end of the third to give Wartburg a 45-44 lead
Fourth quarter
- After two lead changes to start the fourth, UW-Eau Claire went on a 7-0 run to take a 53-47 lead
- A three pointer a minute later gave the Blugolds the biggest lead the game at 56-48 with 6:32 to play
- A Lauren Donlea driving layup and a three pointer from Harris cut the lead to three less than two minutes later
- The Blugolds stopped the run with a layup, but back-to-back layups from Sara Faber led the Knights to score the next nine points
- Golinghorst pushed the lead up to four after a pair of free throws and Wartburg held on to win 62-59
