Men's Basketball Fall in Final Seconds 79-78 to Coe

WAVERLY, Iowa – Wartburg men's basketball's comeback fell short as Coe held on to win 79-78 over Wartburg on Wednesday, Feb. 15. The Knights are now 8-7 in American Rivers Conference play and move to 11-13 overall. 
 
Game Summary
  • First Half
    • After trailing 10-4 to start, Wartburg scored seven straight points after two layups from Codey Hicks and a three pointer from Marshun Williams
      • Hicks and Williams combined for the Knights first 18 points of the game
    • After a Williams basket tied the game at 16 with 11:43 left in the half, Coe scored the next 16 points unanswered to take a 32-16 lead
    • Trailing by 16 with just over five minutes left in the half the Knights begin to chip away at the lead and force turnovers
    • Drew Olson made a layup and then assisted the next two Hicks baskets to bring the Knights within two points with 1:10 left in the half
    • Hicks scored the final four points of the half to give him 17 first-half points and to tie the game at 36 going into halftime
  • Second Half
    • Each side traded baskets to start the second half, but a Coe three-point play gave them a three point edge
    • Olson and Jack Molstead both scored off of turnovers to tie the game at 44 with 16:09 to play
    • After a Keagan John three pointer, Coe went on another run to lead by seven
    • The Knights cut the lead back down to two, but the Kowhawks scored the next six points to take a 63-55 lea with 8:37 left to play
    • The lead grew to as many as 13 before the Knights heated up from three and made four three pointers in under two minutes of game time
      • Donovon Smith made two three's, while John and Olson both made one during the stretch
    • After two John free throws, the game was tied 74-74 with 2:13 to play
    • Coe went up three with 1:50 left, but Olson scored on the next two possessions to give Wartburg a 78-77 lead with 11 seconds left, but TJ Schnurr found an opening for a dunk that put Coe ahead 79-78 with seven seconds left
    • The Knights got a good look for a final shot, but Cade Daugherty's three pointer rimmed out at the buzzer
