Men's Soccer Defeat Luther 3-2 in an A-R-C Battle

WAVERLY, Iowa – Men's soccer outdueled Luther College 3-2 in a back-and-forth American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) matchup on Saturday, Oct. 12. The win moves Wartburg to 6-3-3 overall and 3-1 in A-R-C play, while Luther is now 5-4-4 overall and 3-1 in A-R-C play.
 
Match Summary
  • First Half
    • Luther has the first shot opportunities of the match as Javier Pastor missed the target in the fourth minute before firing a shot on goal in the 12th minute that was saved by Henry Eckert
    • In the 13th minute, Aidan Mott beat the defense and put a shot on goal that was deflected by the keeper over to Lwings Kabula, who made an acrobatic finish to put the Knights on the board 1-0
    • Andrew Valenzuela streaked past the defense and recorded a shot on goal in the 14th minute that was saved by Luther
    • Hunter Yeatts recorded a shot on goal that was saved in the 30th minute an then Luther closed the half with three shots on goal
      • Including a goal in the 43rd minute to tie the match at 1-1 headed into halftime
  • Second Half
    • Both Mott and Pastor recorded shots on goal that were saved in the first 10 minutes of the second half
    • The Knights were able to regain the lead in the 69th minute when Itsuki Ebisawa beat his defender and sent a long pass across the field to Mott, who buried the shot to make it 2-1 Wartburg
    • Eckert made two more saves, but Luther continued to fight and was able to draw a penalty in the 79th minute
      • Pastor put the penalty kick in the top right corner to tie the match at 2-2
    • After a Flori Gembo shot was deflected, Gembo took a corner for the Knights in the 83rd minute that was finished with a clutch header from Carson Kay to put Warburg back on top 3-2
    • The Knights held off the Norse in the final minutes to earn a 3-2 conference win at home
