Five Second-Half Goals Leads Knights Past Cornell 7-0

WAVERLY, Iowa – Men's soccer defeated Cornell College 7-0 at home after five second-half goals from the Knights on Thursday, Sept. 19. Wartburg is now 3-2-2 overall this season while Cornell moves to 2-3 overall.

  • First Half
    • The Knights attacked offensively early into the match with Alima Mmunga recording two shots and Landon Harstell recording a shot on goal all within the first 10 minutes of play
    • After a Kaleab Wendy shot was blocked in the 24th minute, the score remained 0-0 despite Wartburg controlling possession
    • The tie was broken in the 30th minute when Aidan Mott scored after an assist from Hunter Yeatts
    • Yeatts found Flori Gembo for a score in the 44th minute to push the haftime lead to 2-0
  • Second Half
    • The Knights were back on the scoreboard early into the second half when Landon Hartsell assisted a Wendy goal to make the score 3-0
    • In the 68th minute, Mason Yeatts fired a shot that beat the keeper to push the lead to 4-0
    • Henry Eckert made his only save of the night in the 68th minute after Cornell's first shot on goal
    • Just two minutes later, Gembo was able to beat the defense for his second goal of the match with an assist from M. Yeatts
    • The Knights added another goal when Sabin Bolin stole it from the keeper for an easy score
    • The final goal of the match came in the 77th minute when Blake Whitlow beat the keeper with a header to make the match 7-0 in favor of Wartburg
