No. 13/16 Wartburg to host Nebraska Wesleyan in home opener

WAVERLY, Iowa—The No. 13/16 Wartburg football team (2-1 overall, 1-0 American Rivers Conference) hosts Nebraska Wesleyan (1-1, 0-0) today in its home opener.

This marks the first time in program history the Knights have opened the season with three-straight road games.

The Orange and Black enter the game having won 19-straight conference games, which ties the school record that was previously set during the 1998-99-2000 seasons.

The Series
Wartburg owns the all-time series at 7-0, which equates to every year NWU has been in the league (since 2016).

Dawson Rud leads the team on the ground with 118 yards.

Quarterback Carter Markham has thrown for 745 yards and four touchdowns. 

Carter Henry has 17 receptions for 279 yards and one TD. Two players join him in triple digits with Drake George with 203 yards on 20 catches and one score and John McConohy with 111 yards on 12 catches for two TDs.

Keenan Tyler leads the defense with 30 total tackles. Conner McDonald has 3.0 TFLs and 2.0 sacks.

Cael O'Neill is 7-8 in PATs and has two field goals.

George is second in pass receptions (187), sixth in pass reception yards (2,183), and tied for sixth in pass reception TDs (18).

O'Neill is third in field goals (23) and fourth in PATs (132). Ben Bryant is first in punt return yards (881) and tied for third in punt returns (68). 

Parker Rochford is tied for first in interception return TDs (4), tied for fifth in interceptions (15), and tied for seventh in pass breakups (26).

Nate Link is tied for seventh in fumble returns (2) and Justin Grieff is seventh in quarterback hurries (8).

They rank seventh in blocked punts (1), 17th in rushing defense (51.7), 18th in defensive TDs (1), 24th in time of possession (33:27), 32nd in net punting (38.07), 40th in first down offense (64), 48th blocked kicks (1), tied 48th in winning percentage (0.667) and 49th in 3rd down conversions percentage (0.468).
 
The Knights have six athletes ranked in the top 100 in various national statistical rankings.
 
Carter Markham ranks 23rd in completions per game (20.67), 27th in passing yards (745),  30th in completion percentage (.674) and 42nd in passing yards per game.
 
Conner Grover and Keenan Tyler both rank 16th in fumbles recovered (1).
 
Drake George ranks 44th in receptions per game (6.7)
 
Jaxon Hoppes ranks 48th in punting (38.6)
 
Cael O'Neil ranks 49th in field goals per game (.67)

Nebraska Wesleyan
Trystin Myers has 34 rushing yards with one TD. Connor White has thrown for 301 yards for two TDs. Cole Siems leads the receivers with 141 yards on eight catches for one touchdown.
Jacob Leu leads the defense with 9.0 tackles.
