No. 11/12 Knights Hold Off Kohawks 55-49 in a Defensive Battle

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – No. 11/12 women's basketball won a defensive battle on the road against Coe College 55-49 in American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) play on Wednesday, Jan. 22. The Knights are now 15-2 overall and 8-0 in A-R-C play, while Coe moves to 13-4 overall and 5-3 in A-R-C play.  
 
Game Summary
  • First Half
    • First Quarter
      • Lauren Woeste got the scoring started for the Knights with a layup to tie the game at 2-2
      • With just over five minutes left in the first quarter, Britney Young connected on a three pointer but Coe answered immediately with a three of its own to make the score 5-5
      • Woeste scored the next six points for Wartburg to push the Wartburg lead to 11-8 with under a minute left in the first
      • Grace Hennessy made a three for the Knights with 10 seconds left, but Coe was able to score at the buzzer to make the score 14-12 with Wartburg in front
    • Second Quarter
      • After two early baskets from Coe to take the lead, Lauren Golinghorst converted a three-point play to put Wartburg back in front 17-16
      • Over the next two minutes of play, Coe went on a 7-0 run to take a 23-17 lead with 4:56 left in the half
      • The Knights started to chip away at the lead after a Murphy layup and a three pointer from Natalie Bearbower put them within one point with 3:46 left in the second quarter
      • Hennessy and Murphy both scored in the paint before Woeste closed the half with back-to-back scores to give Wartburg a 30-23 lead at the break
        • Wartburg closed the half on a 13-0 run
  • Second Half
    • Third Quarter
      • After three minutes of scoreless play to begin the half, Faber scored back-to-back baskets to push the Wartburg lead to 34-23
      • Lauren Golinghorst and Jenna Saunders both drilled three pointers for the Knights to give Wartburg a 40-29 lead after three quarters
    • Fourth Quarter
      • Coe jumped out to a 7-3 run to begin the fourth qaurter, but Wartburg answered with a three pointer from Faber and two free throws from Woeste to go back ahead by 12 with 5:49 left in the game
      • The Kohawks would not go away as they put together an 8-0 run to cut Wartburg's lead to four points before four straight points from Faber stopped the run
      • After scoring the next five points, Coe made the score 52-49 with under a minute to play
        • The Knights were able to close the game when Murphy found an open Hennessy for a dagger three pointer that put Wartburg ahead 55-49 with 20 seconds to play
