No. 2/11 Women's Basketball Defeat Simpson 61-49 On the Road

INDIANOLA, Iowa – No. 2/11 Wartburg women's basketball continued American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) play on the road today against Simpson College with a 61-49 win on Saturday, Jan. 4. The win moves the Knights to 11-2 overall and 4-0 in A-R-C play, while Simpson falls to 6-7 overall and 2-2 in A-R-C play.

  • First Half
    • First Quarter
      • Sara Faber and Lauren Golinghorst got the Knights on the scoreboard with baskets in the paint
        • The score was 4-4 after four minutes of play before Simpson went on a 7-0 run to take a 11-4 lead with 2:50 left in the first
      • A score from Lauren Woeste followed by a three pointer from Britney Young cut the Storm lead to 11-9
      • Woeste and Jaedon Murphy both scored in the final minutes of the quarter, but the Knights trailed 15-12
    • Second Quarter
      • Back-to-back scores to start the second quarter from Golinghorst gave the Knights a 16-15 lead
      • Simpson answered with a 10-2 run that gave the Storm a 25-18 lead with 6:35 left in the first half
      • Faber exploded offensively for the Knights, scoring the next 11 points for Wartburg over the next three minutes of play to cut Simpson's lead to 31-29 with 2:50 left to play in the half
      • Murphy tied the game up minutes later at 31-31 and then Woeste closed the half with a pair of free throws that put the Knights ahead 33-32 at halftime
  • Second Half
    • Third Quarter
      • Wartburg got the second half started with a 7-0 run to take a 40-32 lead after a three pointer from Murphy as well as baskets from Faber and Woeste
      • Simpson cut the lead to 42-38 with 4:23 left in the third, but Murphy connected on another three and scored a basket in the paint to push the Knights' lead to 47-38
      • Murphy and Faber each scored in the final two minutes to give Wartburg a 51-40 lead after three quarters
    • Fourth Quarter
      • The Knights continued to add to the lead when Natalie Bearbower scored at the free throw line and Woeste added a layup to push the lead 14
      • Following Simpson's first points of the fourth, Faber responded with a three pointer followed by a steal and score the next possession to give Wartburg a 59-42 lead with 6:11 left in the game
      • Woeste scored the final two points for the Knights as Wartburg closed out a 61-49 win on the road
