MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- The Wartburg College women's basketball team (1-2 overall) faced a 63-56 setback in its opening game of the Paul F. Knueppel Classic against DePauw University (1-1 overall).
The Knights were held to just 18-of-53 from the floor, and 9-of-31 from long range.
Grace Hennessy scored a team-high 13 points to go along with a career-high four blocks.
Lauren Golinghorst (11) and
Katie Boulanger (10) rounded off the double-digit scoring for Wartburg.
DePauw bolstered out to a 7-0 lead to open the game, while Wartburg's first bucket came on a three-pointer from
Lauren Donlea with 7:39 in the opening quarter. The Knights were held scoreless for just over four minutes as the Tigers claimed an 18-10 lead with 2:28 to play. At the end of one, DePauw led 22-12.
A strong second quarter was in play for Wartburg, as it equalized the game up at 26 with 6:03 left in the half. Hennessy gave the Knights their first lead of the game with a triple on the next possession, 29-26. The Orange and Black outscored the Tigers 23-to-9 to lead into halftime, 35-31.
Right out of the break, Hennessy knocked down another three-ball to put Wartburg up by seven. Points weren't easy to come by for either team, combining for just 19 points the third. Heading into the final quarter, Wartburg held a 45-40 advantage.
A 9-2 run by the Tigers gained a 50-49 advantage with 4:35 left but was answered quickly on the Knights' next possession by a triple by
Reagan Pagniano. DePauw strung together a 13-4 run to cap a 63-56 win in the opening contest.
Wartburg's bench outscored DePauw's 13-to-9, yet the Tigers scored 16 points off 16 turnovers.

Wartburg turns to host Wisconsin Lutheran at 3:15 p.m. tomorrow, for its final game in Milwaukee. The Warriors (2-0 overall) took down Gustavus Adolphus 69-54 in the nightcap.
