MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Wartburg College women's basketball team (1-3) fell in the second game of the Paul F. Knueppel classic against Wisconsin Lutheran College (3-0), 53-67.
The Knights shot 48% from the floor and 38% from behind the arc but were unable to overcome their 19 turnovers.
Lauren Golinghorst scored a team-high 20 points, while
Katie Boulanger and
Grace Hennessy scored eight apiece.
The first quarter was tightly contested, with Wartburg and Wisconsin Lutheran combining for seven lead changes and three ties. Wartburg's first points came from a three-point shot by Golinghorst with 7:30 in the first quarter. After some back and forth, the Knights trailed after one quarter, 12-14.
The second quarter began with Wisconsin Lutheran going on a 12-6 run to extend the lead to eight, 26-18. A layup and a free throw apiece from Hennessy and Golinghorst cut the lead to four, 24-28, and before halftime the Knights trailed 27-33.
Wartburg kept it close in the third quarter, trading buckets with Wisconsin Lutheran, as Golinghorst and Hennessy knocked down a pair of threes before a Boulanger layup cut the lead to three, 38-35, at 7:33 left in the quarter. The Warriors would close out the quarter on a 13-6 run, leading 51-41 at the end of the third quarter.
The Knights could not bring the game back within single digits in the final quarter despite Golinghorst's seven-point quarter, and Wisconsin Lutheran closed out the 53-67 win.
Wartburg's recorded nine steals and four blocks, but were unable to overcome the Warriors' offensive rebounding, which led to 15 second chance points.
