WAVERLY, Iowa – Men's basketball was dominant in its home opener today in a 86-67 win over Macalester on Sunday, Nov. 9. The Knights were led by 13 made three pointers as a team and a double-double performances from
Cael Schramm and
Ethan Yungtum.
Wartburg moves to 2-0 to begin the season while Macalester falls to 0-2.
Game Summary
- First Half
- Macalester opened the game on a 7-1 run fueled by four points in the paint and a three pointer
- Ethan Yungtum scored in the paint for Wartburg to start an 8-4 run to bring the score to 11-9 with Macalester still in front after six minutes of play
- Yungtum and Austin Bienemann scored seven of Wartburg's eight points during the run
- After a scoreless minute, Yungtum followed a Wartburg miss with a tip in to tie the game at 11-11 with 12:23 left in the half
- Macalester was able to open a four-point lead that was quickly cut to one after a three pointer from Yungtum, which began an 11-2 run for Wartburg to put the Knights in front 22-17 with 8:19 left in the half
- Lyle Olsen connected from deep for Wartburg before Mason Matson scored the next five Wartburg points following a layup and a three pointer to put the Knights in front by nine
- Macalester cut the deficit to seven, but Wartburg answered with a 12-0 run to take a 44-25 lead with just under two and a half minutes left in the first half
- Olsen scored five of the 12 points and both him and Poe connected on three points during the run
- Schramm scored another basket in the paint and Matson closed the half with a three pointer that gave Wartburg a 49-28 halftime lead
- Second Half
- Following an early score from the Scots, Olsen and Bienemann each scored two points to keep the Knights ahead 53-30 after almost five minutes of play into the second half
- Macalester was able to cut the lead to 15, but after a timeout both Poe and Matson connected from deep to begin a 12-0 run
- Poe made two three pointers during the run
- Matson drilled his fourth three of the game on just four attempts to push the score to 68-43 with just under 10 minutes left to play
- The lead grew to 30 after a highlight windmill dunk from Austin Bienemann and scores in the paint from Yungtum and Schramm
- The Knights kept attacking Macalester's defense in the final minutes as Brody Bauer and Patrick Murtagh each made three pointers, while Drew Britson, Clay Nielsen and Dominc Braet closed out the win with scores of their own
