Balanced Offense Leads Men's Basketball Past Stars 87-66

WAVERLY, Iowa – Men's basketball got back in the win collum with an 87-66 win at home over Dominican University on Monday, Dec. 15 behind a balanced offensive attack for the Knights. Nine different players scored today for the Knights and five scored in double-digit figures.
 
The Knights are now 8-2 overall and remain 2-1 in American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) play, while Dominican is now 1-8 overall.
 
Game Summary
  • First Half
    • The Stars struck first on the scoreboard with a three pointer, but the Knights answered with back-to-back scores in the paint from Cael Schramm to make the score 4-3 after three and a half minutes
    • Ethan Yungtum followed a Dominican three pointer with a basket to tie it at 6-6 before Schramm found Bienemann on a lob for a three-point play following an athletic reverse layup finish from Bienemann
    • Wartburg continued to build a lead with a 14-2 run over the next two and a half minutes led by eight points off the bench from Mason Matson
      • The Knights led 23-10 with 10:25 remaining in the first half
    • Matson made his third three of the half minutes later and then Wartburg added to the lead with a driving layup from Gabe Trujillo to put Wartburg in front 29-15
    • Dominican outscored Wartburg 9-5 over the next three minutes to make the score 34-24 with five minutes left in the half
    • Each team traded baskets in the final five minutes of the half to keep the halftime deficit at 10, 44-34 Wartburg
      • Yungtum scored five of Wartburg's 10 points to end the half
  • Second Half
    • Schramm and Bienemann came out of the halftime break and scored four points each for Wartburg's first eight points of the second half as the Knights led 52-40 four minutes into the half
    • Four different Knights scored over the next three minutes to keep Wartburg in front 62-49
    • Dominican continued to fight as the Stars cut the Wartburg lead to eight with 8:58 to go, but the Knights answered with back-to-back scores from Ladwig
    • Three pointers from both Bienemann and Lyle Olsen stretched the Wartburg lead to 78-60 with just 6:04 left to play
    • Wartburg outscored Dominican 9-6 in the final minutes of play to secure an 87-66 victory at home following scores from Bienemann, Trujillo, Wemark and Yungtum
