Men's Basketball Top Bethany Lutheran 84-63 Inside Levick Arena

WAVERLY, Iowa – Men's basketball continued nonconference play this evening with an 84-63 win over Bethany Lutheran College. Four Knights finished with double-digit scoring figures and both Ethan Yungtum and Cael Schramm recorded double doubles.
 
Wartburg is now 9-2 overall, while Bethany Lutheran moves to 7-4 overall.
 
Game Summary
  • First Half
    • Both Gabe Trujillo and Cael Schramm each scored in the paint to put Wartburg ahead 4-2 after two minutes of play
    • Each team scored seven points over the next three minutes of play as both teams took leads before Ethan Yungtum scored five-straight points to give Wartburg a 15-11 lead
    • Both Luke Ladwig and Yungtum each scored for the Knights, but the Vikings were able to close the lead and tie the game at 19-19 with 11:19 left in the half
    • Wartburg ripped off a 15-2 lead sparked by back-to-back three pointers from Mason Matson and Jamison Poe to retake a 34-21 lead with 6:12 left before halftime
    • Bethany Lutheran cut the deficit to nine points with just over three minutes remaining in the half, but the Knights outscored the Vikings 9-5 in the final minutes of the half to make the score 45-32 at the break
      • Bienemann and Yungtum each added four points during the run
  • Second Half
    • Bethany Lutheran got the second half started on an 8-2 run that brought the Vikings back within seven points after three minutes of play
    • Schramm and Bienemann combined to score the next eight points to give Wartburg a 15-point lead with 14:28 remaining in the game
    • The Vikings continued to fight and once again cut the lead back to 10 minutes later despite scores from Bienemann and Matson
    • A Ladwig three pointer followed by scores from Gabe Trujillo, Bienemann and Schramm put the Knights in front 69-52 with just under seven minutes left to play
    • Wartburg outscored Bethany Lutheran 15-11 in the final five minutes of play to secure a 84-63 win at home
      • Ladwig found both Bienemann and Trujillo on emphatic alley-oop slams in the final minutes of play
