No. 8/13 Women's Basketball Close A-R-C Play 16-0 for the Second-Straight Season After 72-58 Win Over Coe

WAVERLY, Iowa – No. 8/13 women's basketball capped off its second-straight 16-0 American Rivers Conference regular season record after defeating Coe College 72-58 at home on Saturday, Feb. 22. The Knights close the regular season with an overall record of 23-2 and an A-R-C mark of 16-0, while Coe moves to 19-6 overall and 11-5 in A-R-C play.
 
This is just the second time in program history Wartburg has gone back-to-back seasons undefeated in A-R-C play.
 
Game Summary
  • First Half
    • First Quarter
      • Britney Young got the scoring underway with a layup with an assist from Jaedon Murphy, but Coe answered with a three pointer to take a 3-2 lead after two minutes
      • Murphy put the Knights back on top with a three pointer of her own before Lauren Woeste made back-to-back baskets in the paint to stretch the Wartburg lead to 9-3
      • Coe closed the final five minutes of the first quarter on a 13-6 run to take a 16-15 lead after the Kohawks were 3/5 from three during the run
        • Murphy scored five of Wartburg's six points during the run
    • Second Quarter
      • Despite scores from Murphy and Woeste, Coe pushed its lead to 24-19 after an 8-4 run in the first three minutes of the quarter
      • Trailing 26-19 with under six minutes to play, the Knights closed the lead with a 9-5 run over two minutes led by back-to-back three pointers from Lauren Donlea and Young
      • Following a Kohawk timeout, Wartburg closed the half on a 8-2 run that put the Knights in front 36-33 at halftime
        • Young made another three pointer to lead the run in scoring, while Murphy, Faber and Woeste all scored once in the final minutes of the half
  • Second Half
    • Third Quarter
      • Coe hit back-to-back shots from deep to begin the second half to take a three point lead, but a Woeste score in the paint and a third three from Young kept the Knights in front 41-39 with 7:28 left in the third
      • Each side scored eight points over the next two minutes of play to make the score 49-47
        • Both Young and Faber connected from three-point range during the run for the Knights
      • After almost three minutes of scoreless play, Woeste stopped the draught with a layup followed by two points each from Lauren Golinghorst and Grace Hennessy to give Wartburg a 55-47 lead with 1:27 left in the third
        • Faber connected from three to give the Knights a 58-47 lead after three quarters
    • Fourth Quarter
      • After Coe scored a layup early into the fourth, Murphy connected on her third three of the game to put Wartburg ahead by 12
      • Donlea made another three pointer for the Knights and both Murphy and Faber scored two each to push Wartburg's lead to 68-53 with 5:37 left to play
      • Murphy and Young both scored in the final minutes to close out a 72-58 win over the Kohawks
