Waverly, Iowa – Women's soccer's home opener was spoiled by three second-half goals from St. Olaf to give the Oles a 3-0 win over the Knights on Wednesday, Sept. 3 at Salzwedel Field.
Match Summery
- First Half
- Athena Sheets got the match underway with two shots in the first three minutes of play, including a low on-target shot that was saved by St. Olaf
- The Oles responded with a flurry of shots on goal with two coming in the ninth minute followed by another shot in the 11th and one more in the 14th that were all saved by Tulla Jensen
- Wartburg was able to get behind the Oles defense in the 30th minute when Sami Webster fired a shot off the crossbar that led to a shot on goal from Nikayala Youngblut that was saved by one of the Ole defenders to keep the match scoreless
- Youngblut fired another shot on goal in the 32nd minute and then Jensen made a save for the Knights on the other end in the 33rd minute
- Jensen made two more saves for Wartburg to close a 0-0 first half of play
- Second Half
- St. Olaf kept up the offensive pressure out of the halftime break, which resulted in two goals for Megan Timmerman, who scored twice unassisted off of deflections in the 47th and 49th minutes to give the Oles a 2-0 lead
- Following a Jensen save and a team save, Wartburg applied some offensive pressure of its own when Webster got some space and put a shot on goal that was once again saved by the St. Olaf keeper
- St. Olaf forced a corner kick that led to a goal in the 65th minute to make the score 3-0
- Neither team was able to record another shot on goal to keep the final score at 3-0 in favor of St. Olaf
