ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Wartburg College volleyball team (3-1 overall) earned its fourth consecutive sweep over the University of Wisconsin-Superior, taking down the Yellowjackets in the opening match of the Saint Paul Tournament on Friday night at the Butler Center.
The Knights controlled the match by set scores of 25-23, 25-21, and 25-20. Wartburg hit .189 as a team while holding UW-Superior to a .131 attack percentage.
Whitney Klyn paced the offense with a match-high 11 kills, leading a balanced 41-kill performance from the Knights.
Liv Anderson added eight kills, while setter
Sophie Sedgwick tallied a match-best 18 assists.
The Yellowjackets dropped to 2-3 on the season.
SET ONE (1-0)
Wartburg used a 5-0 scoring spurt to take a 6-4 lead in the first set, before achieving its largest lead of five at 14-9 to force a Yellowjacket timeout. From there, the Knights cruised to an opening set victory of 25-23. Klyn collected four kills, while both
Aspen Falk and Sedgwick provided five assists a piece. The Knights held the Yellowjackets to just a .093 hitting percentage in the opening frame.
SET TWO (2-0)
Anderson started to heat up after putting up four kills herself, totaling her to seven through two sets. Sedgwick tallied eight more assists in a 25-21 set two victory. The second set featured a match-high 15 ties and six lead changes in a neck-and-neck battle. The Knights posted their first two service aces by
Anna Sash and Klyn.
SET THREE (3-0)
Wartburg led for the entirety of set three, before UW-Superior took its first lead at 20-19. The Yellowjackets bested the Knights for the first time in the match, attacking at a .146 clip, compared to the Knights' .108. Klyn went for four kills, as Sedgwick stayed intact with five more assists.
The Orange and Black went on to sweep the Yellowjacktes for the fourth-consecutive meeting with a 25-20 win in the final set.
