Women's Basketball Defeat BVU 64-53; Laynee Hogan Scores Career-High 12 Points

STORM LAKE, Iowa – Women's basketball moved its winning streak to 13-straight games with a 64-53 road win over Buena Vista University on Wednesday, Feb. 11. Wartburg is now 17-6 overall and 13-1 in American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) play.
 
The Knights were led in scoring by three players in double-digit figures, including a career-high 12 points from Laynee Hogan.
 
Game Summary
  • First Half
    • First Quarter
      • Trailing 4-0 early into the game, Grace Hennessy got the Knights on the board with two free throws followed by a score from Katie Boulanger to tie it up 4-4 after three minutes of play
      • Two driving scores from Laynee Hogan and a jumper knocked down by Boulanger, with an assist from Lauren Golinghorst, gave Wartburg a 10-8 lead with 4:17 left in the opening quarter
      • After the Beavers tied it at 10-10 with just under two minutes, Hennessy was able to knock down Wartburg's first three of the game with an assist from Lauren Donlea
        • The Knights led 13-12 after the first quarter
    • Second Quarter
      • BVU took an early 14-13 lead, but Wartburg responded with the next five points to regain an 18-14 lead after three minutes of play into the quarter
        • Both Boulanger and Corrie Harrison made one free throw before Boulanger connected on a three for the Knights
      • The Knights continued the run with a layup from Hogan and three pointers from both Donlea and Hennessy to push the Wartburg lead to 26-16 with just over four minutes until halftime
      • The Beavers cut the lead to seven points following a made three, but Wartburg closed the half with two points each from Harrison, Boulanger and Golinghorst to give the Knights a 32-19 lead at the break

  • Second Half
    • Third Quarter
      • Both Hennessy and Harrison scored to begin the second half as Wartburg continued to lead 35-22 after a minute and a half
      • Boulanger made two free throws, but BVU outscored the Knights 6-2 over the next three minutes to cut the deficit to 37-30 with 5:42 remaining
      • Following a made free throw from Aden, Hogan scored the next five Wartburg points after a driving layup and a three pointer to put the Knights in front 43-32 with 3:23 left in the third
      • The Knights closed the quarter with three pointers from both Hennessy and Boulanger along with a driving score from Aden in the final seconds to push the Wartburg lead to 51-37 headed to the fourth quarter
    • Fourth Quarter
      • Hennessy connected on another three pointer and Harrison added a layup to keep the Knights in front 56-42 after two and a half minutes of play
      • Scores from Golinghorst, Hogan and Aden brought the lead to 60-46 with just under three minutes left to play
      • Emma Townsley and Aden each made free throws in the final minutes to give the Knights a 64-53 win
