Knights drop Tuesday contest to Hawkeyes in Iowa City

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Wartburg College baseball team (3-1 overall) dropped its Tuesday contest to the University of Iowa (6-2 overall), 13-0, in seven innings at Duane Banks Field.

The Knights mustered just three hits against seven different Hawkeye arms. Andrew Gallegos, Gehrig Turner, and Bode Nagelmaker all tallied singles.

Starter Zach Byrne (0-1) held Iowa in check for 2.1 innings, finishing his stat line on the bump allowing three hits and four earned runs. Conner Funk, Logan Sullivan, Miles Mudd, and Will DeStigter all made appearances out of the bullpen for the Knights.

Gallegos singled up the middle to give Wartburg its first hit of the game in the top of the first, as starter Byrne was able to work around a leadoff hit-by-pitch.

The Knights were able to hold the Hawkeyes scoreless up until the bottom of the third.

Conner Funk then replaced Byrne on the hill after Iowa plated a pair off a two-RBI double and another hit-by-pitch. The Hawkeyes scratched seven total runs in the third to lead 7-0.

The Hawkeyes added a trio of runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to hold the Knights scoreless throughout the contest – Wartburg's first shutout since Nebraska Wesleyan on April 26, 2025.
