Coe Outlasts Wartburg in 12-Inning Battle

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- The Wartburg College baseball team (9-4 overall, 0-1 A-R-C) had its six-game winning streak snapped in a 4-3 extra-inning loss to Coe College (10-5 overall, 1-0 A-R-C) in the conference opener at the Plaster Athletic Complex.

Drew Conrad paced the Knights offensively, going 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI, while Garrett Kadolph added a solo home run—his second of the season—and finished 2-for-5 at the plate.

Starter Emerson Alberhasky delivered a strong outing, tossing five innings while allowing just two earned runs on five hits with seven strikeouts. Owen Greco followed with a scoreless sixth inning before Kam Volz (3-1) took the loss, working the final 3.2 innings with five strikeouts while surrendering the game-winning run in the 12th.

Wartburg struck first in the second inning as Andrew Robinson reached after being hit by a pitch, setting up Conrad's two-out RBI double for a 1-0 lead. The Knights threatened for more, but Coe cut down a runner at the plate to limit the damage.

After Coe tied the game in the third, Wartburg regained the lead in the fourth. Jayden Scott opened the frame with an infield single, and Andrew Gallegos was hit by a pitch to put two on. Following a sacrifice bunt by Bode Nagelmaker, Conrad delivered again with an RBI single to make it 2-1.

Kadolph extended the lead in the fifth with a leadoff home run, pushing the advantage to 3-1 before Coe answered with a run of its own.

The Knights maintained a 3-2 lead into the eighth, but the Kohawks capitalized with two outs to even the score at 3-3. Both teams were held scoreless through the ninth, sending the contest into extra innings.

In the 12th, Volz recorded a strikeout to open the frame before Coe strung together a double and a walk. A ground ball just out of reach sealed the 4-3 walk-off victory for the Kohawks.
