Wartburg Drops Back-and-Forth Battle with Central, 6-5

WAVERLY, Iowa – The Wartburg College baseball team (11-6 overall, 2-3 A-R-C) dropped a 6-5 decision to Central College in the series opener Friday at Hertel Field.

Andrew Robinson led the Knights at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and an RBI. Griffin Troha reached base four times with two walks and two singles. Central held an 11-9 advantage in hits and capitalized on two Wartburg errors.

Central (8-10 overall, 3-1 A-R-C) struck early, loading the bases with no outs in the first inning. After Emerson Alberhasky (1-1) recorded his first strikeout of the game, the Dutch followed with back-to-back RBI singles and later added a third run on a walk to take a 3-0 lead.

Alberhasky settled in during the second, recording his fourth and fifth strikeouts to keep Central off the board. Wartburg answered in the bottom half as Keegan Schmitt recorded the team's first hit, and Robinson later drove him in to cut the deficit to 3-1.

The Knights evened the score in the fifth inning. Troha delivered a two-out single, followed by a hit-by-pitch to Drew Conrad. An RBI single brought Wartburg within one before Andrew Gallegos plated the tying run to make it 3-3.

Central regained the lead in the sixth, but Wartburg responded in the bottom half. Charlie Krueger opened the inning with a single, and Robinson followed with a double to put both runners in scoring position. Bode Nagelmaker drove in the tying run, and Troha later scored on a passed ball to give the Knights a 5-4 advantage.

The Dutch answered in the seventh. After loading the bases, Alberhasky exited with two outs, and Miles Mudd entered in relief. Central's first batter against Mudd delivered a two-run single to reclaim a 6-5 lead.

Alberhasky went 6.2 innings, allowing six runs (five earned) on nine hits while striking out nine. Mudd retired the side in order in the eighth to keep Wartburg within one.

Robinson added his second double of the game in the seventh, but the Knights were unable to capitalize. Wartburg was held scoreless over the final two innings as Central secured the series-opening win.

"We just need to have much better at-bats, as we started a lot of our rallies with two outs," head coach Casey Klunder said. "Especially with the wind blowing out tomorrow, we need to have much better discipline at the plate up and down the lineup."
