MELBOURNE, Fla. – Softball competed in the Space Coast Spring Games on Thursday, Mar. 5 where the Knights opened play with a 9-0 mercy-rule win over New England College before defeating Misericordia University 13-5 in their second game.
With two wins today, head coach
Jamie Mueller has reached 228 career wins to become the all-time winningest coach in Wartburg softball history.
The Knights are now 6-4 overall and will return to the Spring Break Games in Clermont, Fla. on Friday and Saturday, Mar. 6-7 for two more games each day.
Game Summary
- vs New England College
- First Inning
- Jillian Panther started in the circle for the Knights and picked up one strikeout in a 1-2-3 top of the first for the Wartburg defense
- The Knights got started offensively with a single from Liz Kruckenberg and a walk from Reagan Hassel, which led to a double steal that forced an error that brought Kruckenberg home for the first run
- Walks from both Ally Happ and Bella Mulder loaded the bases for Jenna Wiebenga, who walked to bring in another run
- Katelyn Klever kept the inning going with a three-RBI triple to left field that cleared the bases and made the score 5-0
- Stephanie Kiefer and Alexis Larson both walked before Kiefer stole third and home to bring the Knights lead to 6-0 after one inning of play
- Second Inning
- Panther stranded two runners in the second inning to keep New England off the scoreboard
- Hassel singled on a bunt and then stole second base, but was unable to be hit home as the Knights continued to lead 6-0
- Third Inning
- Wartburg added to its lead in the bottom of the third when Carley Bredar walked and stole second base before eventually scoring after a throwing error and sacrifice bunt from Wiebenga
- Fourth Inning
- Following a three-up and three-down top of the fourth, Happ and Mulder both singled before Bredar hit into a fielders choice that left runners on second and third
- Wiebenga singled through the left side of the infield to bring across both Happ and Bredar and make the score 9-0 headed to the fifth
- Fifth Inning
- The Pilgrams recorded their first hit of the game in the top of the fifth inning, but the Knights allowed no runs to close out a 9-0 shutout win
- vs Misericordia
- First Inning
- Wartburg jumped on Misericordia early with a walk from Kruckenberg and an infield single from Happ, which led to a two-RBI single from Wiebenga to put the Knights in front 2-0
- The Cougars responded with one run in the bottom half to cut Wartburg's lead in half 2-1
- Second Inning
- After a scoreless top of the second, the Cougars took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the second to take a 3-2 lead headed to the third inning
- Third Inning
- Wartburg retook the lead in the third inning after a triple from Mulder scored Happ and then a double from Wiebenga brought Mulder home to give Wartburg a 4-3 lead
- A Bredar groundout scored Wiebenga to add to the Wartburg lead and then Larson kept the inning going with a triple and a steal to make the score 6-3 after the top of the third
- Hannah Hoefer pitched for the Knights in the third and got three-straight outs to send the game to the fourth inning
- Fourth Inning
- Larson added to Wartburg's lead with a double to left field that scored both Sophie Stanic and Bredar to make the score 8-3 headed to the bottom half of the fourth
- Fifth Inning
- After Happ reached on a hit by pitch, she was brought home after Wiebenga doubled to center field to give Wartburg a 9-3 lead
- Sixth Inning
- Misericordia scored two innings in the bottom of the sixth to send the game to the seventh with a 9-5 Wartburg lead
- Seventh Inning
- Addy Wells tripled to begin the final inning and was scored on a fielding error one batter later
- Strzyzewski stole home for the Knights on a double steal and then Hassel hit a double to score Kruckenberg and make the score 12-5
- Wiebenga added another RBI with a double to right center field that scored Hassel and gave Wartburg a 13-5 lead
- The Knights worked around two base runners in the bottom half to secure a 13-5 win over the Cougars
