Wartburg Downs St. Scholastica 9-4 at RussMatt Invitational

DAVENPORT, Fla. -- The Wartburg College baseball team earned its second victory of the RussMatt Invitational with a 9-4 win over the College of St. Scholastica.

The Knights improved to 5-3 overall on the season, while the Saints fell to 3-2.

Owen Greco (1-0) picked up the win in his first start of the year, delivering six strong innings on the mound. The right-hander allowed just four hits while striking out six.

Greco worked a clean first inning and recorded his first strikeout of the game before Wartburg took an early lead in the bottom half. Bode Nagelmaker drew a bases-loaded walk to push across the game's first run.

The Knights added to their advantage in the second inning. Nolan Heard reached base before Liam Bender advanced him with a sacrifice bunt. Griffin Troha followed with an RBI single up the middle to plate Heard, and Andrew Gallegos lifted a sacrifice fly to deep center to score Troha. Keegan Schmitt later stole home to give Wartburg a 4-0 lead.

St. Scholastica got on the board with a run in the top of the third, but the Knights quickly answered in the bottom half. Andrew Robinson and Tanner Jackson each reached base to start the inning, and a sacrifice fly from Heard moved the runners into scoring position. Troha delivered another RBI, and Schmitt ripped a two-run triple into the right-center gap to extend the lead to 7-1. Schmitt later used his speed to steal home, pushing the Wartburg advantage to 8-1 after three innings.

Greco finished his outing after six innings, and Miles Mudd entered in relief in the seventh inning for his third appearance of the season.

The Saints pushed across three runs in the eighth to cut into the deficit, but the Knights responded in the bottom half. Jayden Scott led off the inning with a double and later scored on a wild pitch to cap the scoring and secure the 9-4 victory.
