Knights Stumble in Final Regular-Season Meeting with Luther

DECORAH, Iowa – The Wartburg College baseball team (17-13 overall, 8-10 A-R-C) fell in both ends of its regular-season series finale against Luther College Tuesday afternoon. The Norse took game one, 6-3, before securing an 11-1 walk-off victory in eight innings in the nightcap.

Tuesday's doubleheader marked the 107th all-time meeting between the two programs and the final regular-season conference matchup ever.

With the sweep, Luther improved to 26-9 overall and 16-5 in American Rivers Conference play, maintaining its position atop the league standings. The Norse will host Simpson this weekend in a pivotal three-game series featuring the conference's top two teams vying for the regular-season title.

GAME ONE – Luther 6, Wartburg 3
Luther snapped Wartburg's four-game win streak with a 6-3 victory in game one to force a winner-take-all matchup in game two.

Luther struck Wartburg starter Kam Volz (3-2) early with a run in the bottom of the first, after sitting down the first batter he faced.

Charlie Krueger tallied the Knights' first base knock of the game with one out in the second, followed by Tanner Jackson's single to center. Wartburg loaded the bases after Keegan Schmitt drew a two-out walk, but Luther was able to get out of the jam to keep it at a 1-0 deficit.

In the bottom of the second, the Norse tacked on four runs on four hits to claim a 5-0 lead after two complete.

Wartburg found put up a crooked number in the fourth, as both Krueger and Jackson reached base – Krueger hit-by-pitch, Jackson walked – to set up Bode Nagelmaker, who reached base safely on a fielder's choice to score Krueger in from second. With two outs in the frame, Liam Bender knocked in a pair of Knights with a two-RBI single to center to cut the Luther lead down to two, 5-3.

Cael Funk made his 11th appearance of the season, as Volz ran into a bit of trouble in the fourth. At the end of the fourth, the Norse added a run to lead 6-3.

Zeroes across the board for the remainder of the game, as Luther knotted up the season series at one with a 6-3 victory.

Volz was dealt the loss allowing five hits, six runs (five earned), three walks and a pair of strikeouts through just 3.1 innings, as Funk and Tucker Ladeburg each made appearances out of the bullpen.

Despite the defeat, Wartburg out-hit Luther 6-to-5, with Scott leading the way with his 11th multi-hit game of the season. Bender drove in two RBIs with a 1-for-4 day at the plate – fourth multi-RBI game of the season. Prior to today, Andrew Robinson reached base safely in all 28 games this season but saw that streak snapped in game one. Tanner Jackson continued his seven-game hitting streak with a single.

GAME TWO – Luther 11, Wartburg 1 (8 inn.)
Scott tallied Wartburg's first extra-base hit of the entire day to open the finale series, as freshman Aidan Smith (0-1) earned his first career start on the mound. Luther's first two batters reach via hit-by-pitch. Gehrig Turner helped the right-hander out by back picking a Norse baserunner at second to momentarily limit the damage on the basepaths. Luther went on to plate a trio of runs in the bottom of the first to take an early 3-0 lead.

Zach Byrne made his way out to the hill for Smith in the second, after the Knights managed just one hit in top half.

The Norse tacked on another run in the third, and three more in the fifth to manage a 7-0 lead.

Wartburg found the scoring column in the seventh when Krueger led off the inning with a single to right, followed by a Jackon single to stick runners on second and third after an error committed by Luther. Drew Conrad took Keegan Schmitt's position in the lineup, converting on a sacrifice fly to score Krueger in from third, 7-1.

Senior Nicholas Chapman made his way to the bump for the first time since May 9, 2025, in the bottom of the eighth. Chapman picked up a strikeout on the first batter he faced – just his third punchout of his Wartburg career.

Sophomore Will DeStigter replaced Chapman with just the lone strikeout in the frame – DeStigter's fourth appearance of the season. Luther was able to capitalize on a handful of free passes in the eighth, as it walked off Wartburg with a three-run homerun to clinch the regular season series with an 11-1 win in eight innings.

Wartburg managed just four hits against the league's top pitching staff with Jackson leading the way with two hits – Luther tallied nine hits in game two. The Knights left eight runners on the basepaths.
