MONMOUTH, Ill. -- The No. 9-ranked Wartburg College football team (1-0 overall) rallied from a 21-14 halftime deficit with 22 unanswered points in the second half to defeat Monmouth College, 36-21, Saturday at April Zorn Memorial Stadium.
The Knights overcame a 14-point first-quarter deficit and scored touchdowns on four consecutive possessions spanning the second and third quarters to take control of the contest.
Wartburg opened the game with a pair of promising drives, but Monmouth capitalized on a fourth-down stop and a Wartburg turnover to build a 14-0 advantage after the opening quarter. Quarterback
Josh Papesh connected with
Justis Bachman,
Taylen Curry and
Caleb Egesdal on third-down completions during the Knights' opening possession, but a holding penalty stalled the drive before Monmouth recorded a fourth-down sack.
The Scots then turned a 62-yard scoring drive into the game's opening touchdown before adding another score following a Papesh fumble later in the quarter.
Wartburg responded in the second quarter with a pair of touchdown drives to erase the deficit.
Dawson Rud capped a 45-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run before Papesh found
Titan Schmitt for a 15-yard touchdown with 4:22 remaining in the half to even the score at 14-14.
Monmouth regained the lead late in the half with a 2-yard touchdown pass, but Wartburg quickly moved into scoring position before halftime.
Carson Bruns returned the ensuing kickoff 30 yards, and Papesh completed three passes in the final 15 seconds to move the Knights to the Monmouth 25-yard line.
After trailing 21-14 at halftime, Wartburg seized control in the third quarter.
Adam Link intercepted a pass at the Monmouth 36-yard line to open the scoring surge, setting up Papesh's 27-yard touchdown pass to
Sam Heither.
Jackson Othmer's extra point tied the game at 21-21 with 12:34 remaining in the quarter.
The Knights' defense forced another stop, and Wartburg marched 50 yards in five plays, capped by Bruns' 1-yard touchdown run to give the Knights their first lead of the afternoon.
Wartburg added to its advantage after
Dylan McCaulley blocked a Monmouth punt with five minutes remaining in the quarter. The Knights needed just three plays to capitalize, as Rud scored on a 15-yard touchdown run before Bruns converted the ensuing two-point attempt to push the lead to 36-21.
The Knights' defense limited Monmouth to just one first down and 0-for-4 on third down in the third quarter.
Wartburg's defense completed the comeback with a scoreless fourth quarter, forcing two turnovers on downs and adding Link's second interception of the game. The Knights also received a pass breakup from
Grant Gray and a fourth-down quarterback hurry from
Jake Walker late in the contest to preserve the 15-point victory.
Papesh completed 19-of-24 passes for a career-high 265 yards and two touchdowns, while Rud powered the ground game with 100 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries. Link finished with eight tackles and two interceptions, while
Conner McDonald led all Knights with nine tackles and forced a fumble.
