Knights notes: Coach Rick Willis’ Knights, ranked No. 13 by D3Football.com and No. 16 on the American Football Coaches Association’s Division III top 25, bring a 6-0 overall and 4-0 league mark into a clash with the University of Dubuque. The Spartans sport a 2-4 overall and 1-3 IIAC record. … In the series, Wartburg has won 18 of the past 19 with two of the last four games being decided in extra sessions. The Knights claimed a 41-14 win at UD’s Chalmers Field in 2009. … The Orange and Black have been a tough task inside their friendly confines. The program sports a 41-8 record at home since Walston-Hoover opened prior to the 2001 season. … Wartburg, holding sole possession of first in the conference, also remains the IIAC leader in scoring defense (eight points per game allowed) and total defense (258.2 yards per game surrendered). The “D” is also first in interceptions (14) and sacks (22). Other top marks include sophomore running back Reese Thompson (Van Horne) being second in rushing (104.5 ypg), junior Josh VanDenHul (N. Sioux City, SD), ranking second in punt returns (6.2 ypr), junior punter Robby Salmon (Mason City) leading the way in yards per kick (43.5), and sophomore defensive back Garrett McGrane (Fairbanks) and VanDenHul being tied for first with four interceptions each. … The Knights’ conference numbers also translate well nationally. Wartburg is in the top 10 of NCAA Division III in four categories – scoring defense (third), turnover margin (fifth – plus 2.17 per game), sacks (10th) and fewest sacks allowed (10th - .5 per game). Salmon’s punting numbers are third-best in the nation, while VanDenHul’s .67 interceptions per game are tied for 19th. Junior defensive lineman Matt Tschetter (Milford) one-sack-per-game average is tied for 20th. … Junior quarterback Dan Stiefel (Sterling Heights, MI), who has five consecutive 150-yard-or-better outings under his belt, looks to extend Wartburg’s remarkable stretch of 38 straight 100-yard-plus passing games Saturday.
