UW-Platteville holds off Knights

Boxscore

WAVERLY – Wartburg College held a 17-11 shots advantage but visiting UW-Platteville tallied the lone goal of a 1-0 match at the Wartburg Soccer Complex Oct. 27.

The Knights, dipping to 9-7, pestered Pioneer goalkeeper Jared Kuehl throughout the evening but none of their seven shots on goal found the back of the net. Kuehl produced saves in each case for his fifth shutout of the year.

UW-Platteville, improving to 10-8-1, got the first of their shots at the Orange and Black’s net in during the first five minutes. A give-and-go play between senior midfielder/forward B.J. Gottschlich and junior midfielder Brandon Chmiel, as part of a two-on-one breakaway, was scored when Chmiel flicked it past charging Knights’ senior goalkeeper Brandon Busbee (Hiawatha) at the 4:48 mark.

Sophomore forward Brandon Cook (Bondurant) led Coach Kirk Artist’s offensive attack with six shots, three of which were on goal. Senior midfielder Eric Peters (Bartlett, Ill.), added four attempts with two on goal.

Wartburg faces a big Iowa Conference road test Saturday, Oct. 30, when they take on Simpson College at Buxton Community Stadium in Indianola at 8 p.m. A victory would give the program at least a share of its fourth league title. Fans can follow the match via a live statistics link on the scrolling schedule section of www.go-knights.net, the Internet home of Wartburg athletics.

Notes – Several scenarios are still in place for seeding for next weekend’s league postseason tournament at Loras College’s Rock Bowl in Dubuque. Fans can check out all of the pairings for both the men’s and women’s fields late Saturday night at www.go-knights.net.
