Knights notes: Willis’ team moved up on spot to No. 12 on the American Football Coaches Association’s Division III top 25. The Knights stayed at No. 13 on the D3Football.com poll. Wartburg was third on the Nov. 3 NCAA Division III West Region ranking. … In the series with the Storm, Wartburg has won the last 12 since the Simpson claimed the 1997 contest by a 35-21 count. The Knights, including a 42-31 win in Waverly last season, own a 38-24 all-time advantage. … Willis’ crew brings in an impressive road win skein, too. The Orange and Black have captured their last nine away from Waverly and are 13-1 in their 14 trips. … Junior quarterback Danny Stiefel of Sterling Heights, Mich., also looks to extend a streak. Wartburg signal callers have fired for 100 yards in 41 consecutive games. … On the current NCAA Division III statistics chart, Wartburg ranks high on several team and individual categories. Team-wise, the Orange and Black is sixth in net punting (37 ypk), due to junior punter Robby Salmon of Mason City ranking second overall (42.59 ypk), seventh in sacks (3.67 pg) with junior defensive lineman Matt Tschetter of Milford ranking in a tie for 19th individually (one per game), ninth in fewest sacks allowed (.56 per game), and 11th in scoring defense (11.11 ppg surrendered). Other impressive numbers belong to junior defensive back Josh VanDenHul of North Sioux City, S.D., (T-15th in interceptions - .67 pg), and senior linebacker Blake Suckow of West Union (T-18th in tackles – 11.22 pg). … Wartburg tops the Iowa Conference in nine team and three individual statistical categories. Among the team-leading categories are rushing offense (197.44 ypg), scoring defense, pass defense (giving up only 107.33 ypg), sacks and sacks allowed. Salmon and VanDenHul both lead the league in their respective categories listed above, while VanDenHul is also first in kickoff returns (24.18 ypr). … Salmon and senior defensive back Andrew Creary of Knoxville were named collegiate division first team CoSida (Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America)/ESPN all-District VII honorees with the release of the teams last week. Both Knights’ players move on the national ballot for academic All-American consideration. Salmon is a chemistry major, while Creary is a business administration major.
