WAVERLY – Wartburg College used a strong offensive attack to post an 86-68 non-conference win over Martin Luther College of New Ulm, Minn., Dec. 10.
The Knights, improving their home mark to 4-3 and overall record to 4-5, got out of the gate fast hitting 64 percent from the field in the first half. Coach Dick Peth’s squad raced out to a 17-6 lead and never looked back.
Wartburg’s final offensive numbers included 14 three-pointers (56 percent accuracy), a 58.2 percent effort from the field, and 40-29 rebounding edge. Junior forward Cole Danielson (Marshalltown) guided four players in double figures with 15 points and earned a team-high two steals. Junior forward Jordan Sathoff (Packwood), freshman guard Tanner Kramer (Hayfield, Minn.), and freshman forward Eddie Diemer (Cedar Falls) each ended with 12. Sathoff pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
Peth’s team returns to action for the Las Vegas Hoopla tournament Sunday and Monday, Dec. 19 and 20. The Knights will play Roanoke College of Virginia at 6 p.m. Pacific Standard Time on the 19th and UW-Oshkosh at 4 p.m. PST Monday.
NOTES – Going to Vegas, Danielson and Sathoff are only separated by a half-point for the team scoring lead. Danielson averages 15.5 followed by Sathoff at 15.4. Junior forward Kirk Sidey of Greenfield is next at 7.3 ppg. … Sathoff is team leader on the glass, averaging 7.8 boards per game. … The 14 treys were the most in a game for the program since the 2008-09 squad hit 10 against Waldorf last November.
