LAS VEGAS, NEV. – Junior forward Cole Danielson (Marshalltown) ended a solid effort at the Las Vegas Hoopla tournament Dec. 19 with 20 points, leading Wartburg in a 74-67 loss to UW-Oshkosh.
Danielson hit four three-pointers to end the tournament with 10. He also dished out two assists, blocked a Titan shot attempt and registered a steal. Freshman forward Eddie Diemer (Cedar Falls)was second on coach Dick Peth’s scoring chart with 14 points to go along with nine rebounds and two blocked shots. Sophomore forward Drew Crawford (Marion) rounded out the double-figure scorers with 11 points.
Just as they did during their day one win over Roanoke, the Orange and Black got out to a quick start. Wartburg led 24-15 with 3:22 to go in the opening frame. A 9-0 run by UW-Oshkosh knotted the score at 24-24 at halftime, and the Titans turned in a 50-point second half to ensure the win.
Day one
Wartburg used 54.3 percent field goal shooting en route to an 83-71 win over Roanoke Dec. 19. Peth’s squad rolled out to a 34-17 lead and was never overtaken by their guests.
Danielson dropped in 26 points including six three-pointers. Junior forward Kirk Sidey (Greenfield) turned in large evening as well with 16 points, four assists and three steals. Senior forward Jacey Heuer (Dumont) added seven points and a team-best eight rebounds.
The Knights (5-6) don’t return to the court until the 2010-11 Iowa Conference slate resumes Saturday, Jan. 8. Wartburg hosts the University of Dubuque as part of a men’s-women’s doubleheader.
NOTES – Danielson’s back-to-back 20-point-plus games were the fourth and fifth of the season for him. He’s also on a current run of three straight contests in which he’s hit multiple three-point baskets and has registered a steal in five consecutive games. … Diemer, with double figure endings in two of his last three appearances, has seen his points-per-game average rise 1.8 points (4.9-6.7).
