Second half score subdues Wartburg

WAVERLY – A battle between Iowa and Minnesota Conference standouts saw a second half goal be the difference at the Wartburg Soccer Complex Sept. 11.

Visiting Augsburg College of Minneapolis, Minn., owning a 10-7 total shots advantage, managed to get one of the attempts past a stubborn Knights’ defense in the 67th minute for a 1-0 final. Head coach Kirk Artist’s offense crashed Augsburg’s goal during the final 33 minutes but couldn’t get even. Of those tries, the best chances came from senior midfielder Eric Peters of Bartlett, Ill., and junior midfielder David Holte of Coralville, who each had opportunities from the right side that were saved, and freshman defender Bob Brown of Iowa City seeing a free kick drift just to the left of the goal in the waning moments.

No. 22-ranked Wartburg, dropping to 2-1, comes back quickly to conclude a busy home-opening weekend. The Orange and Black face Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference power UW-Whitewater as part of a doubleheader with the women’s team at the Waverly Soccer Complex Sunday, Sept. 12. Match times are 1 p.m. (women) and 3 p.m. (men).
