WAVERLY – Giving an unbeaten UW-Whitewater squad all it could handle, No. 21-ranked Wartburg College dropped a 1-0 thriller Sept. 12.
The Knights, dipping to 2-2, produced nine shots offensively. Sophomore forward Brandon Cook of Bondurant and senior defender Kyle McKenna of Davenport each registered two tries with one of those each being at UW-Whitewater’s net. Senior goalkeeper Brandon Busbee of Hiawatha kept the visitors at bay with four saves.
UW-Whitewater (4-0-1) posted the lone goal in the match early in the first half. Coming off a free kick from senior defender Steve Nashleanas, junior midfielder Trevor Swentik hit a header just past Busbee to the left for the score in the 19th minute.
Wartburg continues a rugged set of three consecutive home matches when Macalester College of St. Paul, Minn., ranked No. 7 nationally and No. 1 in the North Region, visits the campus soccer complex Sept. 18.
