WAVERLY – A match between No. 6-ranked Macalester College of St. Paul, Minn., and Wartburg College gave 150 fans at the Wartburg Soccer Complex their money’s worth Sept. 18.
In the end, a goal at 106:15 from the Fighting Scots’ Taylor Rasmussen off a corner kick gave the visitors a hard-fought 2-1 double overtime win. Head coach Kirk Artist’s Knights, dipping to 2-3, gave their guests all they could handle, trailing them by just one total shot (18-17) and having senior goalkeeper Brandon Busbee (Hiawatha) strongly defend his net with seven saves.
The two teams traded own goals less than a minute apart after going scoreless for the first 80 minutes of regulation. Senior midfielder Lucas Prater (Springfield, Mo.), turned in six shot attempts to guide the Orange and Black offense.
Wartburg begins a three-match week with another contest against the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a trip to Northfield, Minn., for a 2 p.m. start against St. Olaf.
