Knights sweep IIAC opener

MOUNT VERNON – Spurred by four players with multiple-goal outings, Wartburg College began its 2010 Iowa Conference schedule on a high note Sept. 25.

Coach Kirk Artist’s men’s squad, moving to 4-3, scored five goals in each half to topple Cornell 10-1. The Knights held a 33-6 shots advantage, as sophomore forward Brandon Cook (Bondurant) and senior defender Kyle McKenna (Davenport) each striking five. Two of Cooks' got into the Rams’ net, while senior midfielder Eric Peters (Bartlett, Ill.) added two goals on three attempts, and senior forward Jon Farrell (Washington, Mo.), did the same on four tries.

In the nightcap, coach Sara Johnson’s women’s team posted three goals in the first 35 minutes en route to a 3-1 win. Freshman forward Anna Aquino (Bettendorf)scored twice on two chances, and junior defender Jess Macauley (Cedar Rapids) tallied the opening goal. Wartburg, going to 5-3, held a 15-4 shots advantage with freshman midfielder Rachel Torry (Urbandale) taking four.

Wartburg resumes its weekend with a non-conference regional twinbill against Concordia College of Moorhead, Minn., Sunday, Sept. 26. The men’s match is at 1 p.m. followed by the women at 3 p.m. at the college’s campus soccer complex.

Notes – The men’s squad 10-goal outburst was its first since October of 2008. … Following Sunday’s doubleheader with the Cobbers, the Orange and Black break from competition until Saturday, Oct. 2, when they travel to Luther College in Decorah.
