Road rally falls short

Boxscore

CEDAR RAPIDS – Battling back throughout the afternoon inside Coe College’s Eby Fieldhouse, Wartburg College dropped a 76-67 Iowa Conference battle with the host Kohawks Jan. 15.

The Knights, falling to 6-8 overall and 1-5 in league play, trailed Coe 21-8 just under eight minutes in. Coach Dick Peth’s team whittled the away at the margin from that point and closed it to as little as six at several points down the stretch. The Kohawks (11-4 overall, 5-1 IIAC) went four-for-four from the charity stripe and also canned two key lay-ups over the last 3:32 to gain the win.

Wartburg turned in a strong offensive effort, hitting 50.9 percent from the field and just over 41 percent from outside the arc. The junior forward duo of Jordan Sathoff (Packwood) and Cole Danielson (Marshalltown), as they have done in recent weeks, continued their solid play. Sathoff led Orange and Black with 18 points, while Danielson added 17. Kirk Sidey (Greenfield), also a junior forward, chipped in 16 points and seven rebounds.

Peth’s squad opens a three-game week Monday, Jan. 17, when league rival Luther pays a visit to Levick Arena for an 8 p.m. start.

NOTES – Sathoff, who has a three-game double-figure scoring streak going, has seen is scoring average rise better than two points (13.4-15.5) in the span. … Danielson takes a six-game double-figure scoring skein into Monday’s clash with the Norse. … Sidey’s double-figure scoring effort was his fourth of the year and first since an 83-71 win over Roanoke College of Virginia Dec. 19.
