Basketball resumes league slate

A stretch of eight Iowa Conference January doubleheaders begins Saturday for Wartburg College. The Knights host the University of Dubuque with 2 p.m. (women) and 4 p.m. (men) start times inside Levick Arena of the Wartburg-Waverly Sports and Wellness Center.

Corey Carlson, head coach of the Don Bosco High School of Gilbertville baseball program, is the recipient.

KNIGHTS NOTES: Men – Wartburg has a 5-6 record. The Knights split a pair of games at the Las Vegas Hoopla tournament Dec. 19 and 20, in recent action. Coach Dick Peth’s squad defeated Roanoke 83-71 and dropped a hard-fought 74-67 decision to UW-Oshkosh. … Through 11 games, the Orange and Black is led by junior forward Cole Danielson (Marshalltown) in scoring. He averages 17 points per game and also tops the team in steals (11) and three-point shooting (30 of 61 –49.2 percent). Danielson’s numbers rank third (points per game), second (three-point accuracy) and tied for first (made three-pointers) in the Iowa Conference. His scoring success is bolstered by five 20-point-plus games and seven appearances in which he’s hit multiple three-pointers including a current run of three such games. … Other strong numbers for the Knights include junior forward Jordan Sathoff (Packwood) 13.4 points and 6.5 rebounds per contest, junior forward Kirk Sidey (Greenfield) 34 assists, and freshman forward Eddie Diemer (Cedar Falls) 15 blocked shots. Sidey is also the team leader in field goal percentage at 54.9.

Women – Coach Bob Amsberry’s team brings a 12-0 mark into the game. It’s the best start in program history. … The Knights received nine ranking votes on this week’s Women’s Basketball Coaches Association/USA Today/ESPN Division III top 25. They also gained 11 votes on D3Hoops.com’s top 25. … Wartburg is coming off the tournament title at its AmericInn Holiday Tournament Dec. 29-30. They defeated Northwestern College of Minnesota 67-53 and UW-Stout 87-59 to win the event for the second successive season and third year all-time. … Senior guard Samantha Harrington (Nashua) was named the tournament Most Valuable Player while junior forward Leslie Wilson (Austin, Minn.), and sophomore forward Maddie Sadecky (Iowa City) were also on the all-tourney team. … Harrington continues to work towards Wartburg’s all-time top 10 in scoring. Her 1,084 points stand 11th, trailing former standout Elizabeth Campbell by 56 points. Wartburg’s scoring leader, averaging 12.3 points per game, has reached double figures in 10 straight contests. She’s also first in assists (43). … Other strong numbers for the squad come from junior forward Emily Timmermans (Vinton) (56 rebounds – 4.7 pg), junior forward Kelsey Teubel (Mount Vernon) (eight blocked shots), junior guard Stephanie Reiter (LaPorte City) (23 steals and 27 of 61 from three-point range for 44.3 percent) and Sadecky (23 of 52 from three-point range for 44.2 percent).

HOME STAND CONTINUES: Loras College of Dubuque comes to Waverly for 6 and 8 p.m. start times Wednesday, Jan. 12. The twinbill with the Duhawks is part of a home and away week, as the Knights go to Coe for a pair of league contests Saturday, Jan. 15.
