Knights Travel to Face Norse in Regular-Season Finale

WAVERLY, Iowa—The Wartburg football team (7-2 overall, 5-2 IIAC) travels to Decorah to face Luther (3-6, 3-4) for its regular-season finale Saturday at noon.

The Series Against Luther:
Wartburg has won nine of the last ten meetings, which includes a streak of the last five in a row.

A Look at the Teams:
Wartburg

Wartburg defeated Loras 24-13 last Saturday.

Senior Marcus Williams (Council Bluffs) made a career-high three field goals on the day.

Junior Connor Dahlstrom (Eldridge) put the Knights on the board with his two-yard run just under five minutes into the game.

Sophomore Andrew Putz (Ankeny) would double Wartburg’s lead with 1:25 remaining in the first quarter as junior Garrett McGrane (Fairbank) blocked Loras’ punt and Putz ran it in from 12-yards out.

Three consecutive field goals by Williams made the score 23-7 with just over four minutes remaining. He made successful kicks from distances of 22, 23 and 19 yards, respectively.

Sophomore Reese Thompson (VanHorne) led Wartburg on the ground with his 93-yards on 22 carries.

Dahlstrom was the next leading rusher with his 12 carries for 42 yards and one touchdown.

Senior quarterback Dan Stiefel (Sterling Heights, Mich.) threw for 235 yards and was 17-26 with no interceptions.

Classmate Levi Helbling (Malvern) led the receiving group with his 76 yards on six receptions. Sophomore Donald Miller (Maywood, Ill.) also had six catches for 67 yards.

Senior Robby Salmon (Mason City) had two punts on the day for an average of 47.0 yards/punt.

Senior David Brooks (Bettendorf) had a career-high ten solo tackles to lead all defenders with 14 total tackles on the day. Junior Mark Lueschow (Cresco) joined him in double-digit tackles with ten.

Luther:
Luther rolled to a 37-7 victory over Cornell College last weekend. The Norse produced 439 yards of total offense.

Defensively, the Norse tallied five takeaways, picking of Ram quarterback Juan Flores twice and recovering three forced fumbles, while holding the Rams to 282.

Senior All-America linebacker Kyle McGivney set the NCAA III record for career tackles with 535. McGivney entered the contest needing six to pass Casey McConnell, Kenyon College (2001-03,05) who held the record with 531. He finished today's game with nine and was also credited with one sack, one interception, one pass break-up and one blocked kick. His interception was the fourth of the season.

Defensive back Robby Jewell also picked off his fourth pass of the year and was also credited with one of Luther's three forced fumbles. Donterrious Porter and Ryan Vinzant had the other two. Trent Kerrigan has a solid afternoon matching McGivney's tackle total with nine and broke-up two passes. 

Offensively, quarterback Chris Reynolds set a single game career high with four touchdown passes.

Reynolds connected twice with Dalen Dirth on eight-yard strikes, a 38-yard connection to Jach Jipp, and his longest of the day, a 40-yard toss to Steven Thompson. Reynolds completed the afternoon with 235 yards while connecting with seven different receivers.

Adam Bohr had his best afternoon in a Norse uniform. Bohr carried the football 26 times for 100 yards and his first career 100-yard game. Bohr also caught a single game career high four passes for 51 yards and scored his first career touchdown, a two-yard plunge, midway through the first quarter.

Tyler Holmlund also posted a single game career afternoon with 44 yards on six rushes, that included a long of 20.

The Wartburg football team is  currently ranked in 12 NCAA National Statistical Sategories this week. The Knights are ranked 11th in sacks allowed, (.67 a game), 21st in net punting, (34.98 yards a game), 38th in tackles for loss, (7.76 a game), 41st in sacks, (2.56 a game), 59th in passing offense, (233.11 yards a game) and 67th in rushing defense, (129.56 yards a game). They also rank 68th in passing efficiency, (134.73 rating), 72nd in scoring defense, (20.78 points given up a game), 74th in total offense, (384.56 yards a game), 79th in scoring offense, (29.11 points a game), 87th in turnover margin, (.33 a game) and 95th in punt returns, (9.44 yards per return).

Individually,Wartburg has seven players who rank in 11 categories. Punter Robbie Salmon is 6th in punting, (41.87 yards a punt). Linebacker Jason Shupp ranks in three categories, he is tied for 16th in tackles, (11.38 a game), he is also tied for 46th in tackles for loss, (1.56 a game) and also tied for 69th in sacks (.69 a game). Receiver Levi Helbling ranks in two categories he is 39th in yards per game, (89.57 yards) and tied for 87th in receptions per game, (5.29 per receptions). Quarterback Dan Steifel also ranks in two categories this week. He is 54th in total offense, (241.11 yards a game) and 72nd in passing efficiency, (134.43 rating). Kicker Marcus Williams ranks tied for 62nd in field goal percentage, (78%). Defensive back and returner Josh VanDenHul is 76th in yards per punt return, (7.73 yards a return) and defensive lineman, Matt Tschetter is tied for 91st in sacks, (.61 a game).

Where Wartburg Ranks against IIAC Opponents:
The Knights rank in the top five in 13 categories against Iowa Conference opponents. They are first in punting (34.8 yds/kick), redzone offense (19-21) and defense (15-23), second in scoring defense (20.7 pts/game), third in rushing defense (142.0 yds/game) and sacks (16), fourth in scoring offense (29.7 points/game), total defense (379.2 yds/game) and rushing offense (155.5 yds/game), fifth in total offense (377.0 yds/game), passing offense (221.5 yds/game), passing defense (237.2 yds/game) and passing efficiency (130.0 yds/game).

Individually, Robby Salmon leads the conference in punting average (41.3) and Connor Dahlstrom is second in rushing (90.4 yds/game). Jason Shupp is the second-leading tackler (12.2). Garrett McGrane is tenth (9.0) and Mark Lueschow is tied for 13th in that category (8.2).

Levi Helbling is third in receptions per game (5.6) and receiving yards per game (82.8).

Dan Stiefel is fifth in passing (216.8 yds/game) and sixth in passing efficiency (129.5).

In sacks, Shupp is fourth, Ross Naylor is tied for ninth and Matt Tschetter is 12th.
