WAVERLY, Iowa-- For the second time this season, the Wartburg men's soccer team upset a Top 25 ranked opponent, as the Knights defeated #13 UW-Platteville 3-2 Wednesday evening.
The Orange and Black previously upset then-No. 12 UW-Whitewater also by a 3-2 score on Sept. 30.
Wartburg now moves to 6-5-2 on the year and UW-Platteville is now 11-2-1.
The Pioneers took the early 1-0 lead at 23:30 as William Pretto scored on Brandon Chmiel's corner kick.
Freshman Zubeen Azari (Spirit Lake) evened the score with his sixth goal of the year at 33:20 and senior Tommy Running (Bloomington, Ill.) had the assist.
Azari moved his points streak to seven-straight games with his goal.
The score remained 1-1 through halftime until Azari netted his second goal of the night at 49:30 to help the Knights regain the 2-1 lead.
Senior Neil Shields (Adel) scored his first goal of the season on a pass from classmate Kris Krohn (Cedar Rapids) at 65:20 to extend the margin to 3-1.
UW-Platteville made the score 3-2 as Chmiel scored late in the game at 87:55. Brad Streich was credited with the assist.
The Orange and Black return to the field Saturday on the road against No. 4 Loras at 3:30 p.m.
