WAVERLY, Iowa-- The Wartburg men's basketball team dropped its regular-season opener 74-65 to Crown College at its own Buzz Levick Tournament Friday night.
Junior Eddie Diemer (Cedar Falls) had a team-high 17 points for the Knights, 14 of which came in the second half.
Senior Mitchell Murphy (Crestwood) nearly joined him in double digits with nine points and a team-best six assists.
Classmate Trevor Dismore (Vinton) was the team's leading rebounder with a career-best seven on the night.
In the second half, the Storm led by 14 with 8:34 remaining, but the Orange and Black answered with a 7-0 run over the next two minutes to slice the liead to single-digits. (55-48 with 6:32 to play).
The two teams traded treys in the span of 27 seconds to bring the margin to five with two minutes remaining.
Wartburg fouled down the stretch and was able to run successful plays in that time span as Murphy hit a three-pointer with eight seconds remaining to make the score 74-65.
The Knights will face Rockford College that fell 130-101 to Grinnell earlier Friday night, Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Consolation game.
