DUBUQUE, Iowa—The Wartburg men’s basketball team (11-11 overall, 5-8 IIAC) defeated Iowa Conference opponent, Dubuque (16-7, 10-4) 73-66 Wednesday night.
Senior Jordan Sathoff (Packwood) became the third leading scorer in program history with his 21 points on the night. He moves ahead of current assistant coach, Jason Steege, who previously held the third spot. He also recorded a double-double with 13 rebounds, just one shy of his career mark.
"Jordan continues to play extremely well as he had a double-double tonight even with Dubuque double- and triple-teaming him," said head coach Dick Peth. "He continues to play above and beyond expectation and this was a great team win."
Sophomore Eddie Diemer (Cedar Falls) joined him in double figures with his 13 points.
The score was tied at 24 all at halftime. The Knights started the second frame on a 6-0 run over the first minute and a half.
The Orange and Black continued to increase their lead to 16 points with 13:54 to go.
The closest the Spartans would come was three points with 1:35 remaining. Dubuque fouled down the stretch and Wartburg made all four of its free throw attempts as Dubuque was unable to run a successful last-second play.
The Knights shot an impressive 65.5 percent from the field in the stanza.
With the win, the Orange and Black increased their winning streak to three.
Dubuque had three players in double figures and was led by 19 from Lee Piccinelli. Mitchell Michaelis had 14 and Chris Frazier followed with 13 points.
Wartburg returns to action Saturday against Loras at 4 p.m..
