WAVERLY, Iowa-- Non-conference opponent, Carthage College (7-2-0 overall) defeated Wartburg (2-5-1) Sunday afternoon.
Freshman Zubeen Azari (Spirit Lake) netted his second goal of the season as he put his shot through on the lower right side to give the Knights the early 1-0 lead at 2:14 into the gam.
Erhan Caglayan evened the score with his goal off Mike Heika's corner kick at 27:02 and Billy Hamilton gave the Red Men the 2-1 lead with his goal at 37:58.
Carthage scored four straight goals to start the second half, including a penalty kick by Jordan Innis which completed a hat trick for him on the day.
The Red Men were ahead 6-1 with 23 minutes to play when junior Jared Nelson (Johnston) connected on a pass from seniors Kendell Stelk (Bettendorf) and Kris Krohn (Cedar Rapids) to make the score 6-2 at 67:56.
Stephen Korosis extended Carthage's margin on a corner kick before an own goal at 77:29 completed the scoring.
The Orange and Black are off from competition until next Sunday when they host non-conference opponent, UW-Whitewater at 4 p.m.
