Wartburg spoils Carleton's opener, 77-73, as Diemer stars

NORTHFIELD, Minn. — Wartburg College (2-2) spoiled the season opener for Carleton College, defeating the hosts, 77-73, Tuesday night.
 
Eddie Diemer, the senior center from Cedar Falls, led the Knights with 20 points, going 9-14 from the field. Thomas Perkins, a senior from Sun Valley, Nev., added 13 for the Knights.
 
Wartburg shot a scorching 71 percent in the first half, including 7-10 on three pointers, and 56.1 percent (32-57) for the game.
 
Wartburg took the lead just past the midway point in the opening stanza on a jumper by Nick Webber, a freshman from Peosta, and had a 47-38 lead at the intermission. Carleton drew within four at 56-52, but the Knights responded by extending their lead to 65-53. Within a minute to go, Carleton got two three-pointers and another bucket to make it close.
 
The Knights travel to Menomonie, Wis., for Thanksgiving weekend games against the University of Wisconsin-River Falls Saturday at 2 p.m. and UW Stout Sunday at 4 p.m. in the UW-Stout Tournament.
