WAVERLY, Iowa-- The Wartburg men's basketball team (6-0 overall, 1-0 IIAC) tied its best start in its NCAA Division III program history in the 92-76 win over Nebraska Wesleyan (5-1, 0-1) Wednesday. The Knights moved to 6-0 which tied the best start under head coach Dick Peth's direction since 2000-01 where they also started 6-0. With the win, the Orange and Black also snapped the Prairie Wolves' five-game winning streak.
Senior Jordan Cannon (Bolingbrook, Ill.) was the team's leading scorer with 22 points. Junior Jaran Sabus (Urbandale) had 16, classmate Nate Woeste (Atkins) had 11 and sophomore Cam Kickbush (Reinbeck) finished with 11.
Junior Clifton Brown (Mims, Fla.) led the team on the glass with 15 rebounds which included six offensive boards.
The Orange and Black led 48-31 at halftime but NWU compiled a strong second half and whittled the margin to four with 4:05 remaining. Wartburg went on a 10-2 run over the next three minutes to build its lead to 12.
Defensively, the Knights held the Prairie Wolves to .231 as a team beyond the arc.
The Orange and Black take to the road Saturday for a 4 p.m. game.
