Wartburg Avenges Earlier Season Loss to Cornell

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa-- The Wartburg volleyball team moved to 17-5 on the season in its 3-2 win over Cornell (19-6) Tuesday. This avenged its 3-1 loss to the Rams at the Knights Classic Tournament earlier this season.

A deciding fifth set was forced and the score was tied at 13 all, until a Cornell hitting error and kill by senior Aryn Jones (Marion) gave the Orange and Black the match victory.

Jones had a team-best 16 kills and classmate Maddie Miller (Johnston) joined her in double digits with 14. Junior Mallary Erbes (Urbandale) recorded a double-double with 26 assists and 14 digs.

Senior Maria Brown (Peosta) had 22 assists and led the team at the service line with three aces. Freshman Katie Foster (Charles City) led all players with 21 digs.

Wartburg took the early lead at 6-1 in the first set, though the Rams battled back to come within three at 23-20. Jones had a solo block and a kill to claim that frame.

In the second set, it was Cornell that jumped to an early 6-2 margin. The Knights did rally to bring the difference to one at 17-16. A four-point run by the Rams gave them the lead for good.

The third set was tied 12 times, which included 23-23. Cornell won the stanza on two consecutive hitting errors by the visitors.

The Orange and Black were able to force a deciding set as they began to build their lead in the fourth at 18-12 and won on four-straight points.

Wartburg concludes its three-game road trip Friday when it travels to Central for a 7:30 match.
