LAS VEGAS, Nev.--The No. 13 Wartburg men's basketball team (9-1 overall) defeated UW-Stevens Point (6-4), 75-66 Thursday in their opening game of the D3hoops.com Classic.
With the win, Wartburg moves their win streak to nine.
The Orange and Black took their largest lead of the first half into halftime, leading the Pointers 40-26.
In the first half, senior Nate Woeste (Atkins) tallied a team-best 10 points. Wartburg scored 22 points in the paint, holding UW-Stevens Point to eight.
The Knights opened the second half on a 10-4 run. During the same frame, the Knights led the Pointers by as many as 20 points.
On offense for the Knights, Woeste had a team-best 16 points. Junior Jaran Sabus (Urbandale) netted 15 points and senior Sawyer Herman (Monticello) had 14. Sabus also recorded a team-high six assists. Sabus' six assists tied his career best, set on Nov. 16, 2016 against Grinnell.
Defensively, the Knights were led by Woeste, who had eight rebounds. Sabus had seven. Junior Josh Gehling (Dyersville) and sophomore Tyler Zumbach (Anamosa) each had one block.
The Orange and Black held the advantages in field goals (27-22), assists (13-8) and steals (9-8). Wartburg tied UW-Stevens Point in three pointers (9).
Wartburg faces Augsburg University on Saturday, Dec. 30 at 2 p.m. PDT in the D3hoops.com Classic finale.
