DUBUQUE, Iowa -- The Wartburg College men's basketball team (16-9 overall, 7-8 IIAC) topped University of Dubuque (10-14, 7-8) on Wednesday 80-61.
In the first 14 minutes of play, the Knights and Spartans were tied at seven different times. Wartburg went on to hold the advantage and took an 11 point lead, the largest of the period, with 1:43 before the halftime buzzer. The half ended 40-33 in favor of the Orange and Black. Dubuque could not answer in the second half, trailing the Knights by as many as 27 points with 9:41 remaining in the game. Wartburg concluded the game with a 19-point victory.
Though the Spartans had a better shooting percentage from the free throw line, Wartburg led in field goals (.517 to .389) and shots from behind the arc (.481 to .300).Â
The Knight's win completed the season sweep of the Spartans.
Senior Nick Webber (Peosta) and classmate Jordan Cannon (Bolingbrook, Ill.) were the scoring leaders for Wartburg, each tallying 16 points. Sophomore Cam Kickbush (Reinbeck) added 11 points, including three three-pointers.
Juniors Clifton Brown (Mims, Fla.) and Saywer Herman (Monticello) both recorded a team-high six rebounds. Herman also recorded three blocks on the night.
The Orange and Black will conclude regular season play on Saturday at Levick Arena against Buena Vista at 4 p.m.
