Wartburg Topped By Central

PELLA, Iowa -- The Wartburg College men's basketball team (14-8 overall, 6-7 IIAC) fell to Central College (12-9, 6-6) on Saturday 91-86.

The Knights took at 11-0 lead to start the first half. Central got within four points at the 6:03 mark to make the game 34-30, but the Orange and Black stretched their lead to 52-43 at the halftime buzzer. In the second, Wartburg led by as many as 12 points with 9:30 remaining, but Central responded and chipped away at the lead. In the last 33 seconds of regulation, the Dutch took their first lead of the day and secured the win with free throws as time expired.

The Dutch held the shooting advantage in field goals (.466 to .408), free throws (.444 to .345) and three-point shots (.781 to .750).

Senior Nick Webber (Peosta) was the team's leading scorer with 14 points. Sophomore Jaran Sabus (Urbandale) and senior Jordan Cannon (Bolingbrook, Ill.) each tallied 13 points. Senior Lenart Kalan (Skofja Loka, Slovenia) hit four three-pointer to round out the top scorers with 12 points.

Sophomore Josh Gehling (Dyersville) grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds and junior Nate Woeste (Atkins) recorded eight boards.

The Orange and Black return home next week to face Luther on Wednesday at 8 p.m.
