WAVERLY, Iowa-- Junior Jaran Sabus (Urbandale) made a career-high 14 free throws en route to his team-best 23 points in Wartburg's (12-7 overall, 5-5 IIAC) 102-92 loss to Dubuque (12-8, 4-7) Saturday. His previous best was 12 set against Governors State on Nov. 26, 2016.
Four Wartburg players also finished in double digits as junior Josh Gehling (Dyersville) had 14, senior Nate Woeste (Atkins) tallied 13, freshman Max Smith Drahos (Cedar Rapids) recorded a career-best 12 and senior Sawyer Herman (Monticello) had 11.
Gehling and Woeste co-led the team on the boards with six rebounds.
The score was tied seven times in the first half, which included 28-28 with 8:53 to go in the frame. The Spartans compiled a 6-0 run over the next 1:30, but the Orange and Black later sliced the lead to one (34-33) with 6:11 in the half. Dubuque answered once more with a 6-0 run and later led 52-44 at halftime.
Wartburg was able to whittle the lead to four (80-76) with 5:49 to play. The Spartans made another three on their next possession to hold off the rally.
The Knights held the team advantage in free throw percentage (.750 vs. .727) as they made a season-high 39 rebounds. They also only surrendered eight turnovers while they forced 12.
The Orange and Black are on the road Wednesday when they travel to face Buena Vista at 8 p.m.
